Celeste filed a petition to the House of Commons in Canada
the spring of 2000. The petition was written with the intention
of getting Canadians more aware of their heritage by having
a designated day to celebrate Leif Ericson and his accomplishments.
The petition was signed by numerous people from the Scandinavian
Community in BC to Manitoba.
The petition reads as follows:
"PETITION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED
We, the undersigned citizens of Canada draw the attention
of the House to the following: That based on the historical
fact that this year 2000 we are celebrating the arrival of
Leif Ericson to Canada a thousand years ago calls for the
attention to recognize the 1000th anniversary of this voyage
from Europe to North America.
Having a designated day to remember and celebrate the importance
of this occasion will give a great opportunity and benefit
for our children to learn more about it in schools, libraries,
etc., and for the rest of us who appreciate such events in
our country's history.
Therefore, your petitioners call upon Parliament to: Consider
the designation of such day starting this year 2000, it will
be quite a loss in the history of Canada to go through this
year 2000 without recognizing such a important occasion. "
This petition was read in the House Of Commons on May 3:rd
2000 (read the presentation).
Unfortunately the petition was not past in the House Of Commons,
with the argument that if we should celebrate Lief Ericson
like they do in USA we would have to have a day to celebrate
every important person that have had a role to play for Canadian
history. This is a week argument, since people usually put
attention to thing events that are of historical outstanding
nature - as is the achievement of being the first known European
to set foot in North America.
Anyway - let Lief Ericson still be celebrated and let his
spirit live in all of us to be remembered forever..
